Everywhere you look, the market for superyachts is booming. According to Vessel, sales of tall, futuristic-looking boats increased 26% from 2017 to 2018. And while some of that demand may be to do with them being just plain cool, even bigger and more luxurious ships are being built. Watch the video above to see how one of these vessels would like to sail.
Here’s why: Economies of scale make it possible to build superyachts of significant size. For the ultra-wealthy, it’s even easier to feel large and powerful on an open water vessel. As such, this year, the United Arab Emirates ordered 90 at a record-breaking $2bn price.
But it’s not just the size of the boats that are getting fancier. The order books of many shipyards can already be spotted with the latest models with a width of 16 meters (52 feet) and a height of 35 meters (113 feet).
That doesn’t leave much room for humanity, which some have criticized as an environmental disaster. The vessels have almost no space for water bottoms, and although there is the possibility of storing the sewage on board, it is still quite a distance away.
