JERUSALEM — A man fell from a hot air balloon in Israel on Thursday, probably after being ejected from the aircraft mid-flight. The fall killed him, and the cause of the incident remained under investigation.
A local television station said it had obtained police footage of the incident, which occurred on Thursday at noon near Kibbutz Aharon in central Israel.
It said the incident was being investigated by the Tel Aviv prosecutors’ office, which referred questions to the Israel Police. An Israel Police spokeswoman said “enthusiastic, human error,” and others were still under consideration.
Firefighters told Israeli media that a man had jumped from the basket and fell 200 meters (656 feet).
The Hot Air Balloon Federation of Israel told Reuters that a pilot had reported seeing a man falling from the basket to the ground after the balloon had landed.
It added: “There has been no reported fire caused as a result of the fall. A pilot summoned the fire services and the police, together with the balloon’s authorities, attempted to rescue the man,” according to a written statement.
