The last F1 challenger signed by American company Chip Ganassi Racing is looking to be the next MotoGP star. Italian manufacturing brand Pecco Bagnaia has already signed up compatriot Marc Marquez and is hoping to capitalize on the ex-Techworks Racing star’s world championship hat trick by signing 21-year-old rising star Andrea Iannone.
Aside from the Italian champion, the select list of Marquez teammates also includes Andrea Dovizioso of Italy and Argentina. Back when Techworks Racing was confirmed, Marquez told F1 Today: “My team (Techworks Racing) will share my personality and my culture. Italian manufacturers can be a very special part of our professional life and I think that also for them this is an important stage, this is a national team, but maybe even more so for them, Italian engineers in the F1, because it is the next step, one that can bring Italian manufacturers to the top table.”
Iannone is currently sitting third in the MotoGP world championship, but will move forward once Moto2 rider Johann Zarco joins Techworks Racing. With Marquez already racing for Honda (and Dovizioso in fourth place), Iannone will most likely start at No. 5 in the opening MotoGP pre-season test. His beginning schedule includes a test at Assen in Holland and then a second test in Qatar.
