Police have charged a man with the murder of a popular barber at a popular public market in Milwaukee.

The body of 61-year-old Grant Koch was found by customers at Milwaukee’s Public Market on Saturday.

Isaiah Turner, 25, was arrested over the incident after police found a handgun with him.

He is alleged to have then driven about a mile and fired shots at other people.

The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the body, and later found that Mr Koch had been shot five times.

“[Mr Koch’s] death is a result of gunshot wounds to the head and body and it appears that he was murdered”, wrote the Medical Examiner’s Office.

Two others were injured, one of whom was not the target of the gunfire, said police.

The police said that it was a “targeted incident” involving “a group of people who had been engaged in a dispute”, according to CNN.

Mr Koch had been at the public market on Saturday night but had not left, the Public Market said in a statement.

“He was a well-liked man who was here frequently to fix hair and eat,” it said.

Sgt Mark Stanmeyer of the Milwaukee Police Department (MPD) told CNN affiliate WISN that Mr Koch was an “outgoing person” who had no criminal record.

“You never know when someone is going to start taking the law into their own hands, and obviously that was the case here,” he said.

“This is exactly why we have to increase security.”

A spokesperson for the MPD said the incident was “likely targeted”, but also said that more details would be released on Tuesday.

There are no CCTV cameras around the Public Market, but the area is patrolled by MPD officers and the city’s fire department.

In October 2015, 26-year-old Ben McMurray was shot and killed in the Public Market’s concert hall, one of the area’s busiest locations.
